Calculated with steel density 7.85 and square outer corners. Real tubes have slightly rounded corners, so mill weights can be about 1–3% lower.

Square Pipe Weight Formula

Weight (kg/m) = [A × B − (A − 2t) × (B − 2t)] × 0.00785

A and B are the outside sides and t the wall thickness, all in mm. A simpler version that gives almost the same answer is (2A + 2B − 4t) × t × 0.00785.

Example: a 40 × 40 × 2 mm square pipe: [1600 − 36 × 36] × 0.00785 = 304 × 0.00785 = 2.39 kg/m, or 14.3 kg for 6 m.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weight of a 40 × 40 square pipe?

A 40 × 40 × 2 mm MS square pipe weighs about 2.39 kg per meter (14.3 kg for 6 m). In 2.6 mm thickness it weighs about 3.05 kg per meter.

What is the weight of a 25 × 25 square pipe?

A 25 × 25 × 2 mm square pipe weighs about 1.44 kg per meter, or about 8.6 kg for a 6 m length.

What is the weight of a 50 × 50 square pipe?

A 50 × 50 × 3.2 mm square pipe weighs about 4.70 kg per meter, or about 28.2 kg for 6 m.

What is the weight of a 20 ft square pipe?

Multiply the weight per meter by 6.096. For example, a 40 × 40 × 2 mm pipe of 20 ft weighs about 2.39 × 6.096 = 14.6 kg.

How do I calculate rectangular pipe weight?

Use [A × B − (A − 2t) × (B − 2t)] × 0.00785 with both sides and the wall thickness in mm. A 60 × 40 × 2.6 mm pipe weighs about 3.87 kg per meter.

What is the standard length of a square pipe?

MS square and rectangular pipes are usually sold in 6 m (about 20 ft) lengths.
